Busboy
Christopher "Chip" Baker was a smart kid. Too smart. The tall poppy gets cut, crab mentality…etc, etc, etc. Teachers accused him of cheating. Colleagues dumped extra work on him. And his family…well, they only praised him when he was useful, then went back to ignoring him.
He drifted through school with average grades, punched the clock at forgettable part-time jobs, and cultivated a rep as the guy who never seemed to care. It was planned, of course – keep your head down, do just enough to get by, crack a joke, and let everyone mistake apathy for mediocrity. By the time he was working maintenance at a corporate food-processing facility, Chip had become an expert at blending in the background.
It was less exhausting that way.
…or at least, it was supposed to be.
One day, something happened at the facility, and he just snapped. Within minutes he'd turned ketchup/mustard dispensers into high-pressure adhesive launchers, and his bosses felt the business end of pumps launching sauces at blinding speeds with ridiculous accuracy.
It wasn't long until Chip was in handcuffs. When asked why he did it, he just had a dry smile and a shrug. It wasn't too long until the ruling came down and he was sent to prison for weaponizing a lunchroom, assaulting his fellow workers, attempted manslaughter, and aggravated burglary.
Prison changed surprisingly little. Chip was still sarcastic, refusing to take anything seriously, armed with a joke for every bad situation…just the worst, really.
What did change was that someone finally noticed what he'd actually built. His inventions were elegant and nonlethal pieces of engineering assembled from ordinary warehouse equipment. When a rehabilitation initiative came looking for unconventional talent, Chip's file landed on the right desk.
He's your problem now, fuck-o.
